Community Service
What is required? 40 hours of community service or volunteering is required by Mapleton Public Schools as part of the graduation requirements.
How Can Students Complete Community Service?
- Writing letters or notecards to the elderly or socially isolated
- Opportunities listed on volunteermatch.org.
- Thrift stores, food banks, animal shelters, and other non-profit agencies
- Local churches for things like helping a kids activity, cleaning up, etc.
Please Note:
If your community service is not listed above, email Monica (JohnsonM4@mapleton.us) to determine if it can “count” for community service BEFORE you start.
Examples:
COUNTS for graduation |
DOES NOT COUNT for graduation |
Volunteering at a non-profit Ex: Humane society, food bank, thrift store
|
Unpaid work for a company or person Ex: working for your uncle’s for-profit company
|
Volunteering at a kids’ summer camp Ex: MPS sports camp, Thornton Rec. Center
|
Babysitting Ex: watching your cousins
|
Writing notecards for the elderly Ex: #1 above and see additional guidelines
|
Activities part of your family obligations Ex: helping your grandma, shoveling snow for family or friends
|
Volunteering at a church Ex: helping run a community event |
Participating in regular church activities Ex: attending service |
When is it due?
Community service hours must be completed before you will be awarded a diploma. While it is possible to squeeze them all in at the very last minute, that is NOT recommended! That is a very stressful situation to put yourself in. Instead, please plan to space out your community service hours between now and your anticipated graduation date. They will be due (for a grade) in Senior Seminar mid-January of senior year.
How do I document hours?
- Volunteer Hours for Graduation 2024-2025:
- You’ll need the name & contact information for the person who is verifying your hours. This person cannot be a member of your family/household.
- Fill out the form once for each type of community service performed.
- If you are volunteering multiple times for the same activity/location:
- Please keep track of your hours in whatever way is easiest for you! Most students like to keep track of them in a note on their phone or in a Google Doc. Don't forget to write down the name and contact information of the person who supervised you at your volunteer site!
- When your community service is complete at that location, use the MOS/NV Volunteer Hours for Graduation form to document the overall hours for that organization/opportunity.
- Fill out the MOS/NV Volunteer Hours for Graduation form separately for each organization or place where you volunteer.
